ITIN Application Help Without the Guesswork
Get your Form W-7, supporting documents, and tax filing requirements right the first time.
An ITIN application is only a few pages long. That does not make it simple.
The IRS needs to understand why you require an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, whether you qualify, and which documents prove your identity and foreign status. In most cases, the application must also be submitted with a US federal tax return.
A missing signature, incorrect reason code, unsupported exception, or unacceptable document can slow the process down.
Entelyglobal helps non-residents, foreign nationals, business owners, spouses, and dependents prepare a complete ITIN number application with fewer unanswered questions.

How can we help? *
First, do you actually need an ITIN?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is a nine-digit tax processing number issued by the IRS.
You may need one when you have a US federal tax purpose but are not eligible for a Social Security number.
An ITIN may be relevant if you are:
- A non-resident filing a US tax return
- A foreign investor receiving US income
- The owner of a US business with an individual tax filing requirement
- A spouse or dependent included on an eligible tax return
- Claiming a tax treaty benefit
- Completing a transaction that qualifies for an IRS exception
- Renewing an expired ITIN for an upcoming federal return
An ITIN is used for federal tax purposes. It does not provide immigration status, permission to work in the US, Social Security benefits, or identification outside the federal tax system.
First, do you actually need an ITIN?
Every application begins with the reason you need the number. That decision affects the Form W-7, the tax return requirement, and the documents included in the submission.
Eligibility Review
We review your US tax purpose and whether you appear eligible to submit an ITIN application.
Form W-7 Preparation
We help complete the current Form W-7 using the correct application type, reason for applying, personal details, foreign address, and identification information.
Supporting Document Review
Your documents must prove both identity and foreign status. We review what you plan to submit and whether additional records may be needed.
Tax Return Coordination
Most applicants must attach a US federal income tax return to Form W-7. We can coordinate the ITIN tax filing and application so the documents are prepared as one package.
Exception Documentation
Some applicants can get an ITIN without a tax return when they qualify for a specific IRS exception. The exception must be supported by the required documentation.
ITIN Renewal
We help review expired ITINs, prepare the renewal Form W-7, and identify the supporting information needed for the next federal tax return.
Application follow-up
We explain how to track an ITIN application and what to do if the IRS requests more information or issues a rejection notice.
Applying Online Does Not Mean the IRS Process is Online
Many people search for an ITIN application online or an ITIN number online application expecting a fully digital IRS process.
You can share information and complete much of the preparation remotely with Entelyglobal. However, Form W-7 and the supporting package must still be submitted using an IRS-approved method.
Applications may be sent by mail or submitted in person through an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, an Acceptance Agent, or a Certifying Acceptance Agent.
Remote assistance makes preparation easier. It does not remove the IRS documentation and submission requirements.
Why Work with a Certified Acceptance Agent?
Mailing a passport or another original identity document can be uncomfortable, especially when applying from outside the United States.
A certifying acceptance agent can review Form W-7 and authenticate most approved identity and foreign- status documents. This can allow many applicants to keep their original documents rather than mailing them to the IRS.
A standard Acceptance Agent can help review Form W-7 but cannot authenticate supporting documents in the same way.
The distinction matters. A passport is the only document that can generally establish both identity and foreign status by itself. Applicants without an acceptable passport usually need a combination of documents. Additional rules may apply to dependents and proof of US residency.
Documents Required for an ITIN Application
A typical application package may include
- ✓A completed Form W-7
- ✓A US federal income tax return
- ✓A valid passport or other accepted identity documents
- ✓Proof of foreign status
- ✓Proof of US residency for certain dependents
- ✓Supporting records for an IRS exception
- ✓Name-change documents where applicable
The exact documents depend on the applicant and the reason for applying.
The IRS currently accepts 13 categories of supporting documents. They must generally be current originals or copies certified by the agency that issued them. Notarized copies are not the same as issuing-agency certified copies.
This is why a document review should happen before the package is submitted, not after the IRS sends it back.
ITIN Applications for Non-Residents and LLC Owners
- The LLC’s federal tax classification
- The number and residency of its owners
- Income connected with the United States
- Required business and individual tax returns
- Information-reporting obligations
- Treaty positions
- Whether the owner is eligible for an SSN
ITINs for Spouses and Dependents
A spouse or dependent may require an ITIN when they are included on a federal return for an allowable tax purpose.
Each applicant needs a separate Form W-7 and their own supporting documents. Dependent applications can involve additional residency rules. A passport without the required US entry information may not be enough on its own, and further school, medical, visa, banking, rental, or identification records may be required depending on age and circumstances.
We review each family member separately rather than treating one application as a copy of another.
Can you get an ITIN without a tax return
Sometimes, but not simply because filing a return is inconvenient.
The IRS normally requires a federal income tax return to be attached to Form W-7. An applicant can submit without one only when a defined exception applies and the required supporting evidence is included.
Exceptions may relate to certain treaty benefits, third-party withholding, passive income, mortgage transactions, or other IRS-recognized circumstances.
We first establish the tax purpose, then determine whether a return or exception documentation should accompany the application.
Renew an ITIN only when you need it
An ITIN generally expires when it is not used on a US federal tax return for three consecutive tax years
You should renew an expired ITIN when it will be included on a federal tax return. You generally do not need to renew it merely because it appears on an information return such as Form 1099.
Filing a tax return with an expired ITIN may delay processing and affect certain allowable tax benefits.
Our ITIN renewal service helps you
- Confirm whether renewal is necessary
- Complete the renewal Form W-7
- Report the existing ITIN correctly
- Update a legal name where needed
- Prepare supporting documents
- Coordinate the related tax return
What happens after you apply
- A CP565 notice assigning the ITIN
- A CP566 notice requesting more information
- A CP567 notice rejecting the application
ITIN Support Built Around the Tax Purpose
An ITIN application should not be prepared in isolation from the reason it is needed. Entelyglobal connects Form W-7 preparation with the supporting documents, federal tax return, business ownership, treaty position, or renewal requirement behind the application. That matters because the IRS is not simply checking whether every box contains text. It is deciding whether the application establishes a valid federal tax purpose. You receive a clearer process, a reviewed package, and support that continues into the related tax filing when required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for an ITIN from outside the United States?
Yes. Applicants abroad can submit Form W-7 by mail or work with a Certifying Acceptance Agent in the US or overseas. The application still needs the correct supporting documents and usually a federal tax return.
Can I use an ITIN for payroll?
An ITIN does not authorize someone to work legally in the United States and should not be used as a substitute for work authorization or an SSN. Employers must follow the applicable employment eligibility and payroll rules.
How do I track my ITIN application?
The IRS does not provide standard online tracking for Form W-7. If the published processing period has passed, applicants can contact the IRS using the relevant domestic or international telephone number.
Does an ITIN expire?
Yes. An ITIN can expire after three consecutive tax years of not being used on a federal tax return. It generally needs renewal only when it will be used on a future federal return.
Is an ITIN the same as an EIN?
No. An EIN identifies a business for federal tax purposes. An ITIN identifies an individual who needs a US taxpayer identification number but is not eligible for an SSN.
Get the Application Right Before It Reaches the IRS
A strong ITIN application clearly connects the applicant, the documents, and the federal tax purpose. Entelyglobal helps you prepare each part together, so the package makes sense as a whole.
